Brief History of New Brighton- New Brighton is a seaside resort located in the town of Wallasey, on the north east tip of the Wirral Peninsula. In its hey day, When New Brighton was the No: 1 holiday resort in the North West of England. New Brighton was the premier holiday resort in the 50's and 60's.. Back in the 1900's New Brighton was aplayground for Children and Adults it was known as Liverpools Playground.. During the latter half of the 19th century New Brighton developed as a popular seaside resort serving Liverpool and the Lancashire industrial towns, and many of the large houses were converted to inexpensive hotels. A pier was opened in the 1860s, and the promenade from Seacombe to New Brighton was built in the 1890s * New Brighton Tower..New Brighton Tower which in it's day housed a magnificent ballroom, and a large circus built theatre style. early sixties when the ballroom was the venue for many gigs by the new generation groups such as, The Beatles, Gerry and Pacemakers, Cilla, Jerry Lea Lewis - the list is endless. . . New Brighton Tower F.C. were an English football League club based in New Brighton that folded in 1901. Like Liverpool, Chelsea and Thames, New Brighton Tower were formed to play at an already-built stadium, the Tower Athletic Grounds, with a massive capacity of 80,000. New Brighton Tower, sadly destroyed by fire in 1969. * Fort Perch Rock..Fort Perch Rock is a coastal defence battery built between 1825 and 1829. It was built to protect the Port of Liverpool and as a fortified lighthouse to replace the old Perch Rock Light. It was originally built on an area known as Black Rock and was cut off at high tide, but now coastal reclamation has made it fully accessible. It is currently open as a museum.. * The New Brighton Pier..The New Brighton Promenade Pier was built in 1867 adjacent to the ferry pier on the north side. It was opened on the 7th September, 1867 and completed on the 9th April, 1868..As in other resorts the pier had its own theatre, The theatre was about 130 feet in length and was used for Concerts, Flower Shows and the like. shows were held there during the 1800's and towards the end of the century. After much discussion, the pier was dismantled in 1978, the ferry pier having been demolished some five years earlier. . * New Brighton Bathing Pool, It was on the 13th of June, 1934, before an assembly of nearly 12,000 people, Lord Leverhulme declared open the finest and largest aquatic stadium in the World. New Brighton Outdoor Bathing pool was a haven for many. Memories, Love and History was made within these boundaries. * Swimming pool..New Brighton Rock was held over two days: Monday 21 May and Tuesday 22 May 1984 at the town's open air swimming pool and transmitted by Granada Television on Saturday 23 June 1984 on ITV. It featured many famous musical artists of the day, such as Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Gloria Gaynor, Madness, Nik Kershaw and Spandau Ballet, The open air swimming pool was demolished in 1990 which was a great shame as it was the place to be on hot summer days.. .. * Wallasey - New Brighton Pier 1962..An extreme sport even by today's standards. Yet in 1962, Wallasey New Brighton Pier they actually held a smiking contest. Lord, they'd never get away with let alone consider it now. Prize was 20 J't'aime! Well I don't know that or who won.... probably one of the big tabacco conglomerates! . * The New Brighton Murderer 1890
Mr. Justice Stephen, who presided in the Crown Court, Felix Spicer, rigger, 60 years of age, was brought up charged with having, at Liscard, on the 25th May, 1890. feloniously, wilfully, and of his malice aforethought, killed and murdered William Spicer; further, with having, at Liscard , on the 25th May, 1890, killed and murdered Henry Spicer; and further, with having, at Liscard, on the 25th May, 1890, attempted to kill and murder Mary Ann Palin. Since the trial and conviction of Felix Spicer for the murder of his two children at New Brighton, circumstances have, it is stated, come to light bearing on the suggestion that the condemned man was insane at the time that he committed the deed. Spicer has a brother living in Birkenhead, and a half-brother, two sisters, and other relatives living in London. "Some of his London relatives," says a correspondent. "had expected to be called at the trial at Chester to give evidence as to the insanity which has from time to time manifested itself in the family, and the fact that they were not is said to be due to the late hour at which Mr Burke Wood was instructed, and that he was not then in possession of the information, which has now come to light.
